Polls don't mean much as of yet, but that doesn't stop the media from commissioning them. Only die-hard activists are truly engaged, and the swing voters won't start focusing on the campaigns until after Labor Day.
However, campaigns take their internal polls very seriously, and one can discern how those polls are looking by watching the actions of candidates.
Every campaign studies the demographics of the electorate and attempts to counter perceived weakness among various voter groups by increasing turn-out and support in other groups. For example, you can already discern that President Obama needs women and young people.
Meanwhile, the Romney opposition machine is beginning to work its magic. While the President's campaign is reminding voters about the successful mission to kill Osama bin Laden, a story appears that the Administration had an Admiral ready to "throw under the bus."
