"Growing More Than Food!"

The Volunteer Center of Story County hosted a celebration to thank all who make "Growing More Than Food" possible. The goal is to grow more to reach more of the community.

The hosted a celebration to thank all who make “Growing More Than Food” possible. has donated use of the land, Urban Dream's AgCulture youth have planned, planted, and tended the garden, garden Volunteer Leaders have supervised volunteer groups, and community Volunteers have cared for the garden. The Service Patch is a volunteer-run community garden in Ames managed by the Volunteer Center of Story County. The gathering of 36 guests was held next to the garden at Trinity Christian Church. Most of the meal at the potluck was made by Urban Dream’s AgCulture, a youth service learning group. The youth used vegetables from the garden to make veggie pizza, salsa, salads and more.  The food was amazing and the celebration was a success!

In summer 2011, eight Volunteer Garden Supervisors led more than 300 volunteer visits at the garden, contributing a total of 375 hours at the Service Patch. More than 180 pounds of food were grown without chemicals and donated to local food pantries and shelters. There is still time left in summer 2012 and the goal is to grow more to reach more of the community.
