High Heels and Ear Infections
Mom of the year reminisces about high heels and ear infections.
I'm not sure if it is the fact that I'm on the downhill swing to 40. Maybe it was because it was sleeting outside. Perhaps it was because I was tired, hungry and had a screaming child in the back. My guess is, it was actually all of them. However, I found myself mildly amused, while sitting in the pharmacy drive thru recently waiting to get medication for daughter of the year No. 2's ear infection, at the young woman who passed. Short skirt, puffy and somewhat furry coat, VERY high heels...and going to the grocery store. Really?
Any mother would agree that children, jobs and everyday stress change things. Obviously, the three of those have caused me to give up my heels for the more comfortable of options. If you'd asked me 20 years ago, I would have assured you I would have a closet that would rival Carrie Bradshaw, where I would refer to my shoes like they are my best friends.
"There you are Jimmy Choo!"
"Ooh, aren't you beautiful Manolo."
Possibly in my younger, less responsible years, I would have randomly gone to the grocery store when it was extremely cold wearing heels. Tonight, I found myself in my SUV with the seat warmer that has started burning my cheeks (and not the ones on my face), in sweatpants and my Champion reverse weave sweatshirt with holes in the wrist area because it is so old and...here's the best part...my ever practical Uggs.
Then, it hit me. I wrote this story long ago when I traded my Louboutins for a mortgage. Jimmy Choo certainly doesn't pay for daycare. And while Manolo Blahnik is a fun name to say, I can't feed my children from a beautiful leopard print sling back.
So, to my friend in fashion in the grocery story parking lot I say "You go girl" at least until you trade your heels for a responsible flat and find yourself blogging about a perfect stranger while your child with an ear infection is screaming in the back.
