Oppo research is a multi-million dollar business. Companies spend countless hours combing through the smallest details of candidates' lives looking for dirt.
Oppo researchers are aided by eager media outlets that want to break a major story. When a candidate becomes a serious contender for national office, the media begins to hit that campaign with big doses of controversy. It's like media whack-a-mole. A candidate begins to rise above the pack and--whack!--here's your controversy!
It's why you are hearing about accusations of sexual harassment against Herman Cain, the name of Perry's hunting camp, or the date that Marco Rubio's parents fled Cuba.
The practice may make most GOPers cringe, but it's important to get this info out early to see how voters react now--not LATE in the process as the Republican candidate approaches the general election.
Of course, many GOPers are bitter because they feel that President Obama was never sufficiently vetted. But I don't know how much more voters could have known about the man before voting for him.
