The Alternate Reality Election

Newspapers are endorsing Republicans and Democrats are running on social issues. What is happening here?

I've just finished reading "The Man In The High Castle" by Philip K. Dick, in which the author posits an alternate reality in which the Japanese and the Germans have won World War II.

For the past couple of days, I've felt like I'm living in an alternate reality election, one in which the Des Moines Register endorses a Republican candidate for President and Democrats decide to make abortion a central issue.

The focus by Democrats on abortion puzzled me after years of hearing how the Republican Party should downplay social issues and emphasize fiscal issues as a means of electoral success.

However, this article attempts an explanation:  top Democrats are actually moving away from the center and targeting the "people groups" that would give the party a long-term left-wing majority.
