United Way Worldwide Recognizes 3M and Wells Fargo

A local look at two companies who received top honors from United Way Worldwide.

United Way Worldwide recognized 3M with the 2013 United Way Spirit of America® award for philanthropy, volunteer engagement and community impact. Wells Fargo also received a Summit award for volunteer engagement. The Spirit of America and Summit Awards program is United Way’s highest national honor for a corporation, recognizing outstanding United Way Global Corporate Leaders.

“We’re so proud of the national recognition 3M and Wells Fargo received,” said Jean Kresse, United Way of Story County President and CEO. “We feel very fortunate to have wonderful local partnerships with both companies, which truly do advance the common good in our community.”

3M raised $8.6 million for 135 communities nationwide through its “Every One Counts. Live United” campaign. In addition, employees volunteered a total of 200,000 hours. In 3M's 60 years of giving, the company has invested more than $1.2 billion to education and charitable organizations.

Plant Manager for 3M Ames Charles Avery said "As a representative of 3M in the Ames community, I am extremely proud to have our company recognized with the top national honor from United Way. 3M and United Way have developed a strong partnership over the last 60 years and we continue to strengthen our commitment to United Way's Give, Advocate, and Volunteer objectives. We are looking forward to a continued partnership to improve the quality of life in Story County."

Wells Fargo is United Way’s #1 national campaign for four years in a row. Wells Fargo team members volunteered 1.5 million hours nationwide in 2012.

“Our company is deeply committed to serving the needs of communities across the nation and right here in Iowa,” said Kim Behrendt, market president at Wells Fargo. “We’re honored by the recognition from United Way, and look forward to our continued strong relationship both at a national and a local level.”

United Way of Story County is a strategic leader in building countywide partnerships to identify needs and to develop, support and evaluate effective human services for our diverse community.
