As I start writing this blog, I think some people may wonder, “Why volunteer?” There is always the altruistic answer, but there are several more motivators for volunteering. Volunteering can foster new skills, increase your experience, allow you to meet new people, even show you a different perspective or culture.
Service can look many different ways:
- Volunteer one time or long-term.
- Volunteer with a group or by yourself.
- Perform manual labor.
- Be social.
- Behind-the-scenes work or highly visible work.
- Work outside, inside, with children, technology, animals, anything!

Often we see volunteering as a way to give back to our community, yet we neglect that service has benefits for volunteers. There are so many needs out there, that all skill-sets and comfort levels can volunteer. Many agencies and nonprofits are heavily relying on volunteers as funding and staff resources become more limited. It is a win-win situation.
So don’t underestimate what you can offer – even if it’s one-time, or 30 minutes – every bit counts.
