Why The Romney Debate Win Is Important

Debates sometimes don't impact elections, but Romney's performance helped his campaign immensely.

Some will argue that debates don't really impact elections, but Romney's win in the debate on Wednesday night was very important to his campaign.

Up until now, conservatives within the Republican party have been lukewarm at best about the Romney candidacy.  Yes, the Paul Ryan pick energized the conservative base, but a campaign can only ride the "I'm-enthused-about-the-VP-candidate" train so far.   At some point, the guy at the top of the ticket has to fire up the base.

Romney did that on Wednesday night.

The importance of this development can be seen within this NPR poll.   If Democrats experience the same kind of turnout advantage they enjoyed in 2008 in the upcoming election, President Obama wins.  However, if enthusiastic Republicans cut that advantage in half, Romney is poised for the win due to his small advantage with independent voters.
