A total of four entries per artist may be submitted. Along with photographs of the entries, artists must submit a biographical paragraph, an artist’s statement about each entry including the date of creation, and a detailed explanation of how the sculpture should be secured or anchored when installed. All work submitted must be original, of sound design, free standing, suitable for public display, safe under conditions of direct public access, and finished as represented. Entries open immediately, and will be accepted until the entry deadline of May 21, 2012. We encourage entries as early as possible in the process; to enable the selection committee to fully evaluate entries, we may need to request further information after an entry has been received.
Entries can be sent to Cathy Gersema, City Manager’s Office,cgersema@city.ames.ia.us, or 515.239.5101.
Mail: City of Ames Public Art Commission, ATTN: Cathy Gersema, P.O. Box 811, Ames, IA 50010.FTP site and instructions available by contacting 515.239.5101.
Photographs
Entries are juried from photographs and written material only. While digital images (high resolution) are preferred, printed photos are acceptable. Digital images can be delivered via CD or other commonly accessible medium; if you would prefer to submit via FTP, please call Cathy Gersema at 515.239.5205. Up to four views per entry are allowed. Photos should be numbered and labeled with the artist’s name, title of work, media, year of creation, dimensions and weight. No substitutions are accepted in lieu of artwork submitted by photograph for juried competition.
Selection
A panel of individuals from the Ames artistic community, along with representatives of the City of Ames and Iowa State University, will compose the jury that will select the winning entry. The artist of the selected work will receive a $3,000 honorarium.
Installation
Transport of the sculpture to and from Ames is the responsibility of the artist. A level, 8' square pad will be provided and bolts in the pad will be installed upon request. The artist and City employees will work together on sculpture installation. Artwork must remain on display throughout the duration of the three-year exhibition. The artist will be encouraged to participate in the dedication of the sculpture in Ames at a date, in July 2012, to be determined. To facilitate this, a small travel allowance will be provided, which will include a per-diem to help cover overnight lodging in Ames.
Sales
No commission will be charged on any sale of the work. The selected entry must have a value placed on it for insurance purposes. The City may choose to purchase the sculpture within the three-year exhibition period. However, if another buyer comes forward prior to the City's decision, the sculpture is to remain installed at the Intermodal Transportation Facility until the end of the three-year period.
Insurance
The sculpture will be insured by the City of Ames up to a maximum of $30,000 property loss after installation. The City retains the right to remove a damaged sculpture in the absence of prompt and satisfactory repair in the interest of public safety.
