Ames firefighters responded this morning (Tuesday, Oct 5) to a structure fire at 417 12th St. Firefighters arrived on scene at approximately 7:14 a.m. and found a small fire in the living room of the house.

A neighbor spotted the fire through the front window of the residence and called 911. Nobody was home at the time of the incident. Firefighters were able to enter the structure, rescue a dog, and extinguish the fire. The fire was contained to the point of origin in the living room with no extension to the rest of the house. However, there was some smoke damage in other areas.
The cause of the fire was determined to be accidental. No one was injured.

Fire Prevention Week continues through Saturday, Oct. 9. During this week, the Ames Fire Department reminds all residents to check smoke detectors monthly and to practice a fire escape plan. Checking smoke detectors will ensure they are operating correctly and provide early warning in case of a fire.
