City Of Ames: Ames Parks Being Prepared For Cold Weather

Ames Parks and Recreation staff will begin shutting down drinking fountains and closing restrooms throughout the park system beginning Wednesday, Oct. 27. As temperatures continue to drop, all park facilities must be winterized to withstand harsh weather conditions. 

“We understand residents enjoy our parks in every season. This year the parks have been especially popular due to the lingering effects of COVID-19, and our goal is to keep the restrooms and fountains on as long as possible,” said Parks and Facilities Superintendent Joshua Thompson. “Unfortunately, due to the lack of heating infrastructure, the restrooms and drinking fountains are not able to withstand below freezing temperatures.”

Maintaining water to unheated facilities during cold winter months can cause water pipes to burst resulting in expensive repairs. When temperatures allow in the spring, staff will restore water to the public restrooms and drinking fountains. Although Ames parks remain open year-round, trail maintenance may be limited during certain times of the year. Visitors should use caution during winter due to the potential for snow, ice, and debris hazards. 

The Parks and Recreation Department manages 38 parks and offers approximately 180 athletic, aquatic, instructional, and wellness programs. Indoor programs are provided throughout the winter at the Community Center, Ames/ISU Ice Arena, and Municipal Pool.
