The Ames Parks and Recreation Department has been awarded a $4,500 Trees Forever/Alliant Energy Planting Hope Grant. This new funding program awards grants of up to $5,000 for tree planting in communities that saw major canopy loss due to the Aug. 10, 2020, derecho.

According to City Forester Paul Tauke, the funds will be used to in conjunction with the Ames Foundation Volunteer Tree Planting event planned for Oct. 9. He added, “Thanks to this grant award, we can plant 25 trees this fall.”

The Parks and Recreation Department manages 38 parks and offers approximately 150 athletic, aquatic, instructional, and wellness programs.
