Invention Convention Displays Ames Elementary Students Creativity

More than a dozen groups of elementary students displayed their inventions at Fellows Elementary School Monday.

If you've ever lost something and couldn't find it, filled your garbage can too full or just didn't have time to match your socks before you left the house, Ames area elementary students have some good ideas for you.

hosted a district wide invention convention Monday that brought innovative ideas such as the Move to Grove that turns off your radio and your lights after you've left the room and also the Kitty Toy Finder in which you attach small beepers to the toys cats often lose.

Kira Simmons said her cat constantly lost toys.

“I didn't want to have to spend any more money on cat toys,” Simmons said.

Simmons and her partner Gabby Lorenz did spend $19.95 for a Maxi Aid, a remote control beeping device, to attach to the often lost items.

Simmons and Lorenz discovered that most people wouldn't pay that much to find a cat toy, but Simmons said she might use it to locate other things she can't find, like her umbrella.

And for dogs there was a dog exercise swing. Jaedyn Koehn said in their first trials there was lots of yelping, but her partner's dog Toby seemed to like it after awhile.
