Lorry's Coffee Opens on Lincoln Way

The expert barista moved into a struggling Lincoln Way location; the shop was started by two Ames residents.

In October, Lorry’s Coffee shop opened on Lincoln Way, giving residents a convenient location to get great coffee, and fast, friendly service.

Lorry’s Coffee was started by Ames residents Matthew Goodman, local businessman and City Council member, and coffee guru Lorry Ver Steeg. Goodman has been in Ames since 1991, and owns the , and also operates . Ver Steeg, who has worked in more than seven coffee shops, is considered an expert barista.

Goodman met Ver Steeg through encounters at several different coffee shops and cafes around Ames and thinks he has what it takes to make the new coffee shop succeed.

“He is just very talented when it comes to service, and to making coffee, so I’ve always thought if there was an opportunity of him owning his own shop, I think he’s really good at it and it would probably be successful as a result of his presence.”

The building Lorry’s Coffee occupies has had trouble supporting business in the past, as a U.S. Cellular, Godfathers Pizza, and Planet Sub have all come and gone. The current owners attribute it to not understanding the local market, and not being in touch with the community.

Lorry’s Coffee serves primarily coffee, but also food, including a breakfast burrito inspired by Fighting Burrito cuisine. Ver Steeg said the drive-through service is becoming more and more popular as people learn of it.

Customers enjoy the atmosphere and friendly service of the new coffee shop.

“I like the music, and last time I was here Lorry was actually here, and he came down and he sat and talked with us for a while, he was just very friendly,” said Iowa State University student Michelle Brackemyer.

Goodman wants people to try Lorry’s Coffee out and see what they think.

“A lot of people get into coffee, and it’s an easy business to get into, but it’s not an easy business to do well, and we really hope people will try us because we think we do it very, very well.”

Lorry's Coffee is located at 2320 Lincoln Way.

Hours are 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
