New and Expanded Businesses Coming to Downtown Ames

One new and one expanded clothing store will be opening downtown soon. Della Viti, a new wine bar with tasting stations had a soft opening recently.

Downtown pedestrians might be feeling the pain of progress this week as businesses undergo renovations that block the sidewalks, but they will have more places to walk through come late spring.

Main Street sidewalks on both sides have been closed for construction in recent weeks. 's new home has been encased in plywood as has the former store on the other side of the street.

Duck Worth Wearing hoped to move in January to its new home, the former , but renovations, including asbestos removal, have delayed the move and reopening.

Once the children's consignment store moves and reopens, , an adult consignment shop up above the current Duck Worth Wearing, will expand into the lower story.

And another clothing store plans to move into a portion of the former Antique Ames site, said Chuck Winkleblack, the building's owner. He's currently remodeling the former Antique Ames shop back into two retail fronts, 203 and 205 Main Street.

Winkleblack expects the new shop to open in May and is still searching for tenants for the rest of the space, which includes loft-style apartments, studio/office space and a 2,400-square-foot store on the ground floor.

Anyone 21 and older can already walk right in to Della Viti in the 300 block of Main Street. The wine bar and automated tasting center opens daily at 2 p.m. Customers must be 21 years old and older to enter. The bar includes several Wine Stations that allow people to buy wine to taste from automated vending machines.
