Spring Break Stay-cation in Ames? Here's Some Things To Do
Spring break begins for many today and on Friday for the rest of us. Here are some ways to spend your stay-cation.

Spring Break is fast approaching and essentially begins this afternoon for students from kindergarten through 8th grade who don't have class Thursday for parent teacher conferences and are out on Friday as well.
All other grades go on Spring Break March 10. If you aren't lucky enough to leave Ames for a vacation, here are some things parents might like to know.

Horsin' Around, a program from 10 to 11 a.m. and 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 13 in the Farwell T. Brown Auditorium. Families are invited to play games, meet Shiloh the Shetland pony, play games, make horse-themed crafts and more.
K-2 Club a regular after-school event will go on as scheduled starting at 2:45 p.m. Wednesday, March 14.

5th Grade Battle of the Books Club is also planned for 4 p.m. Thursday, March 15, in the library's community room.
The library will be open regular hours next week from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Children 8 and under must have adult supervision.
Children can also participate in open gym, public skate and open pool hours at the community facilities.
Open Gym hours are from 7:30 to 9 a.m. Monday through Friday, 1:30 to 5:15 p.m. Monday and Wednesday, 6:45 to 9 p.m. Monday and Wednesday, 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday and 11:30 a.m. to 6:15 p.m. Thursday, 1:30 to 9 p.m. Friday and 6:45 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday. All children 8 and under must be supervised by an adult. Children can enter the gym for $1.
Public Swim hours at the are from 1:30 to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and 7 to 8 p.m., Friday, March 16. Children 9 and under must be supervised by someone 16 or older. Admission ranges from $1 to $3.50.
Public Skate hours at the are from noon to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, March 14. Children 8 and under must be supervised. Admission is $4 for children and skate rentals are $2.75.
is hosting a Renaissance Camp from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. next week. The camp is designed for students in kindergarten through 6th grade. The cost is $35 per day. Call 233-5331 for more information.
All-American Sports Complex in Ames on Lincoln Way will also host some sports spring break camps next week. Session 1 is from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and session 2 is from 12:30 to 5 p.m. Both weekly sessions cost $150. Call 203-9557 to reserve a spot.
Lifeguarding: Older students could learn how to become a lifeguard next week so long as they can swim. Ames Parks & Recreation Department will offer a 2012 Red Cross Life Guard training next week from noon to 8 p.m. March 12 through March 15 and 8 a.m. to 6: 30 p.m. March 16 to March 18. All students must be at least 15 years old, be able to swim 300 yards without stopping and retrieve a brick from the deep end to qualify. The registration fee is $165 for residents.
