Permits are required for door-to-door sales where a business does not have a brick-and-mortar sales location in Ames. The Municipal Code also requires a Transient Merchant Permit for temporary outdoor sales such as produce, mattress, or fireworks stands. Door-to-door sales are typically brief interactions and can be conducted while social distancing. Residents who don’t want solicitors at their homes should post a “No Soliciting” sign.

“With the expiration of the Governor’s order prohibiting these activities, we are resuming the City’s regulations regarding door-to-door sales and temporary stands around Ames,” said Assistant City Manager Brian Phillips. “We encourage residents who are uncomfortable with a salesperson at the door to post a sign now if they don’t want to be disturbed.”
