A greater number of registered voters participated in today's Ames Community School Board election than the election of 2009.
So far, more than 15 percent of voters cast a ballot, according to information provided by the Story County Auditor's Office. By 8 p.m., 15.1 percent of this town's near 40,000 registered voters had cast a ballot, the website reported.
In the 2009 school board election a total of 5.4 percent of voters cast a ballot, said Lucy Martin, Story County Auditor.
Those totals did not include absentee ballots. As of 11 a.m. Monday, 389 Ames voters requested absentee ballots. That doesn't mean they will all be turned in Martin said.
Voter turnout in school board elections is typically low, she said. In the last 11 years, voter turnout has been under 10 percent.
