There is always room for improvement when we think of recycling, but there is plenty to feel good about.

There’s always room for improvement, but there is plenty to feel good about. Take a look at this impressive data from a 2012 EPA study:
- The quantity of materials recycled has increased substantially through the years – from less than 15 million tons per year in 1980 to nearly 87 tons in 2012.
- Since 1990, the total amount of waste going to landfills dropped by over 11 million tons – from 145.3 million tons to 135 million tons in 2012.
- Americans recycled and composted almost 87 million tons in 2012, which saved more than 1.1 quadrillion Btu of energy – the same amount of energy consumed by 10 million U.S. households in a year.
- That same 87 million tons of material recycled in 2012 reduced carbon emissions comparable to that of 33 million automobiles on the road in one year.
- More than 19 million tons of yard waste were composted in 2012, which is five times the amount composted in 1990.
So, keep up the good work, America! Let’s all pledge to stay committed to recycling and see what we can accomplish in the coming years. Happy America Recycles Day!
