Community Corner

Ankeny Historical Photos Wanted!

Are you an Ankeny historian,  or perhaps just have some great photos of Ankeny from bygone days? If so, I'd like to hear from you!

Arcadia Publishing will be publishing a book about Ankeny as part of their Images of America book series. This is a great opportunity for us to shine the spotlight on our wonderful community!

Working with the Ankeny Area Historical Society, I am gathering photos to use in the book to help tell the story of Ankeny's beginnings, spirit, and growth over the years. We would like to make this project a community affair! So far we have had photo contributions from the Kirkendall Library, Tone's, Faith Baptist Bible College, DMACC, Faith United Methodist Church, John Deere Des Moines Works, and several others.

We are particularly interested in photos from 1940-1980 - photos that will help trigger some nostalgia or just help tell our story to newcomers to the community and to others with an interest in Ankeny. Great photos (b/w or color) are ones that are sharp and clear, and that show social events in Ankeny, well-known buildings, business growth, spotlight achievements, or simply help show how Ankeny has changed over the years.

We currently have a number of photos from pre-1940, though will still consider more from that time period. We would also consider photos from after 1980, though the publisher requires that most photos are before that date.

If you have photos you would be interested in sharing, let me know! If we use your photos, we will scan your photos to meet the publisher's specifications, and you will retain the actual photo yourself. Note that there is no money involved - we are not asking for money, nor are we able to pay you for your contributions. Acknowledgements will be made, of course, to indicate who contributed the photo.

We have a very short timeline, since the completed manuscript must be submitted by March 29! Our most significant photo-gathering time will be from mid-February - March 10.

If you have photos you would like to share, let me know! Contact Terri Deems at 515-988-5559, or via email at tadeems@aol.com.

Thank you!
