On With Life Partners with the City of Ankeny and City of Des Moines to Proclaim March as Brain Injury Awareness Month

The City of Des Moines and City of Ankeny worked in partnership with On With Life during the month of March to proclaim March as Brain Injury Awareness Month. Approximately 1.7 million Americans are affected by brain injuries every year, with more than 50,000 Iowans living with the consequences of brain injury. Approximately 20% of American soldiers who serve in Iraq or Afghanistan have suffered a brain injury, presenting new challenges for members of the military and their families.

This City of Des Moines proclamation was presented by Mayor Frank Cownie at the March 11 Des Moines City Council meeting. Ankeny Mayor Gary Lorenz visited On With Life on March 22 to present the organization with the City of Ankeny proclamation. Mayor Lorenz spent the morning touring On With Life and visiting with staff, persons served and families.

"We are excited to partner with both the City of Ankeny and the City of Des Moines to recognize the importance of this month," said Julie Fidler Dixon, executive director at On With Life. "We look forward to continuing our relationship with both cities to raise awareness around brain injury and the importance of prevention, education and rehabilitation."
