Bud Day hailed from Sioux City, and became a pilot in the US Air Force. He flew fighter jets in the Vietnam war, and was shot down over North Vietnam on 26 August 1967. He was held captive for 5 1/2 years, suffered through many torture sessions, and even escaped his prison.
His leadership to his fellow prisoners and resistance to the enemy was a major part of why he received the Congressional Medal of Honor. I had the opportunity to meet him a few years ago, and it was quite an honor. The man had a commanding presence, and the confidence of someone who has faced the worst things about themselves and came out better for it.
COL Day passed away this weekend, and the world is a lesser place without him.
