Ankeny Assistant City Manager Named Interim City Manager

One of Ankeny’s assistant city managers has been temporarily appointed interim city manager.

In a unanimous vote at Monday night’s regular city council meeting, members chose Jim Spradling to serve as interim city manager following the retirement of current city manager Carl Metzger.

"We are extremely fortunate to have someone with the experience and knowledge of municipal government help lead our organization and manage the functions of our city,” said Ankeny Mayor Steven Van Oort in a press release issued by the city Tuesday. “I feel confident that his leadership will help ensure a smooth transition for our city and enable Ankeny to continue as an outstanding example of local government management."

Metzger’s last day with the city is June 30. after serving more than 27 years with the city of Ankeny.

Spradling has served as assistant city manager for more than 16 years. In his role, he has overseen public safety and administrative services, as well as organizational development. He will continue to do so in addition to his new responsibilities.

The appointment is a two-year contract, the release said, which provides Spadling an additional $2,000 in monthly compensation until a permanent city manager is hired. At that time, Spradling will remain assistant city manager.

"I want to help assure a smooth transition for City administration," Spradling said in the release. "I look forward to helping the city council achieve their policy goals."
