Ankeny Cleanup Days Offers You Chance to Get Rid of Junk

The annual Ankeny Cleanup Days will be held May 19 and 20 at the , 1220 N.W. Prairie Ridge Drive, according to a news release.

Residents can take unwanted items to the site from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 19 and from noon to 4 p.m. May 20. Residents who live within the corporate limits of Ankeny may participate in this program, the news release said.

As part of the clean-up, trees and branches will be accepted at the City Maintenance Facility, 211 S.E. Lorenz Drive, which is located across the street from the entrance into Des Moines Area Community College on South Ankeny Boulevard. Trees and branches will be the only debris accepted.

Tree trunks and branches accepted shall be no larger than 8 inches in diameter, according to the release, and no smaller than 1 inch in diameter. Residents are asked to have the cut end of their branches stacked at the end of their vehicles for easy removal.

The Ankeny Rotary Club in conjunction with the City of Ankeny will be sponsoring this year's clean-up. The Rotary Club provides volunteers to assist city workers in unloading materials from vehicles.

Trucks larger than a pickup are prohibited from participating in the disposal of clean-up debris. Ankeny residents can dispose of items commercial haulers charge for or do not pickup. Five residential passenger or truck tires without rims will be accepted. All other tires will not be accepted, which includes semi, tractor, farm or solid tires.

These materials and debris are not accepted at the cleanup site: Antifreeze, oil, asphalt, paint, tree stumps, yard debris, pesticides, freezers/refrigerators, dehumidifiers, air conditioners, ovens/stoves, washers/dryers, furnaces, microwave ovens, batteries, water heaters, televisions, computer monitors, dishwashers and propane tanks.
