Ankeny Homes to Receive Smoke Detectors

Approximately 450 smoke detectors were requested for Ankeny families as part of an Iowa State Fire Marshal program.

The City of Ankeny Fire Department has teamed up with the Ankeny Citizens Emergency Response Team and the Ankeny Lions Club to deliver the first 200 smoke detectors received through the Iowa State Fire Marshal's 100 Year/100 Percent Smoke Detector Program.

The initiative began last fall during Ankeny elementary school parent/teacher conferences. Parents were asked to complete a survey to determine how many Ankeny elementary age children were unprotected by smoke detectors in their homes.

Approximately 450 smoke detectors were requested for families in Ankeny following the survey.

The smoke detectors come with instructions for installation; however, the fire department will make appointments to install the detectors for residents who are unable to do it on their own and need assistance. Fire officials are asking those residents still waiting for a smoke detector for their patience as it may take some time for the entire supply to arrive.

Fire officials will be conducting a similar survey of with Ankeny Christian Academy parents this fall.

Questions should be directed to the Ankeny Fire Department at 515-965-6469.
