Ankeny Police Arrest Three in Connection with Shooting of 12-Year-Old Boy

The suspects were arrested today, including a 12-year-old. Each one is facing a variety of charges for their alleged connection to the September shooting of 12-year-old Michael Wells.

Ankeny police have arrested three people in connection with a September shooting of a 12-year-old boy.

On Sept. 29, police were called to 6388 N.E. 22nd St. in Ankeny, where they found Michael Wells, 12, of Berwick, with a single gunshot wound to the head. According to a news release issued today by the city of Ankeny, police arrested Vickie Beckman, 45, and Charles Toomer, 45, both of Des Moines, for their alleged connection to the incident.

Police also arrested a 12-year-old boy, who is facing charges of assault with a dangerous weapon causing serious injury and reckless use of a firearm, both felonies. The juvenile was taken to Meyer Hall Juvenile Detention Center.

Beckman and Toomer are both facing charges of making a loaded firearm available to a child under 14, a serious misdemeanor, as well as possession of drug paraphernalia. Both were taken to the Polk County Jail.

Wells was taken to Mercy Medical Center following the incident. He was then moved to On With Life in Ankeny to undergo rehabilitative therapy.
