UPDATE: Ankeny Police Investigate Shooting of 13-Year-Old

Police say a Berwick boy was shot in the head while visiting at an Ankeny house Saturday.

Ankeny police are investigating a shooting involving a 13-year-old boy that happened Saturday at about 3 p.m., according to a news release from the department.

The victim, Michael Wells of Berwick, was visiting a 13-year-old friend at a residence at 6388 N.E. 22nd St. in Ankeny, the release said.

The victim was found in the parents' bedroom with a single gunshot to the head and was taken to Mercy Medical Center by ambulance.

Wells is currently in the hospital’s children’s center intensive care unit, and is in critical condition, Gregg Lagan, a spokesman for the hospital, told the Des Moines Register.

Police said there were two other juveniles at the residence at the time of the incident, a 14-year-old girl and her 13-year-old brother. These teens are being treated as witnesses, police said, and their names are not being released.

The youths' parents were not home during the time of the incident. 

Details of how the victim was shot are still under investigation and no charges have been filed, police said.

There are no further details to release at this time, according to the police statement.
