According to a release sent by the city of Ankeny, Martin was listed as a possible suspect shortly after the incident due to his involvement in another investigation. During the course of the investigation detectives interviewed numerous people and located a handgun Martin had in his possession at the time of the shooting, the release said.
The handgun was sent to the Department of Criminal Investigation lab in Ankeny for comparison to shell casings found on the road in front of the police building and bullets found on the lobby floor of the building.
