The initial investigation suggests the shots were fired from the area of Ordnance Road.

Mikulec said multiple shots struck the front of the building's second floor, with several deflected by the brick. Some bullets went through windows and were found inside.

Ankeny police employees didn't realize the building had been targeted until Sunday morning when a records clerk noticed glass shards on the floor as she began work, Mikulec said.

The building is occupied around the clock and the bullet trajectory and pattern were clearly intended to strike the police department, authorities said. Employees working in the building overnight were in the rear of the station's first floor, protecting them from the shots.
