The Ankeny Hawks, on the strength of a 24-point first half and a mostly stingy defense, hung on to win their home opener last night over Waukee, 31-20.

The Hawks finished last season with a 9-4 record, reaching the semifinals of the state football playoffs. Waukee went 4-7 and got knocked out in the first round of the playoffs.
