Ankeny Wins Thriller Against Southeast Polk: Full List of Iowa High School Football Results

For at least two quarters, the Ankeny Hawks looked as though their last season "as one" may have ended before it really ever began.

Southeast Polk Rams jumped out to a 21-7 lead before the Hawks rallied in the second half to beat the No. 10 Rams, 28-21, behind another big night from quarterback Joel Lanning and a stellar second-half performance by the defense.

“We don’t want to be the weak spot,” Ankeny defensive end Ben Ledvina told The Des Moines Register. “If we play well, we know we’re going to win. If we hold a team to 21 points or under, we know we’re going to win because we always score more than 21.”

Southeast Polk reached the end zone on its first three possessions and threatened to do the same on the fourth before halftime. In the second half, though, the Rams got nothing. Zero. Nada.

On the other side of the ball, Lanning led touchdown drives of 80 and 69 drives, finishing both with scoring runs to even the game. Ian Begg finished the scoring with a 6-yard touchdown run to put the Hawks ahead with 2:07 to play.
