Deck the Halls or Deck the Deck?!

Home Remodeling & Outdoor Entertaining Tips

It's not so awkward to be talking about a deck remodel when it's near 70 degrees outside is it?

A deck is an extension of the home that allows family and friends to gather, enjoy dinner, drinks, and laughter. It's almost as important as the indoor spaces. Especially, when it's in the 60's over the holidays!

Many large production home builders put minimal sized decks on homes to keep the sale price to a minimum. But, after a family lives there for a few years, they start to do more landscaping, more entertaining, and dream of a bigger outdoor spaces.

Eric Minner of T & E Construction in Ankeny has done many deck remodels in the area, he noted, "Customers have a specific idea in mind of what they want to do with that outdoor space and we hope to make it a reality. Some of my clients have ideas that range from outdoor kitchens to just a cozy place to read a book. It's important to hire a professional, as there are permits and codes that have to be dealt with in building a deck, as well as how it will look visually and preform over years to come."

Remodeling a deck can not only bring you and your family enjoyment, but it helps add to the value of your home. Rochelle Burnett, Realtor for Keller Williams Realty shares, "A deck make over may not add a significant increase in value to your home, but it definitely makes your home more appealing to potential buyers, especially when it's compared to the home that has a less impressive outdoor presence."

Minner of T & E Construction suggests searching the internet for ideas before meeting with your builder, start a wish list of sorts. A builder or remodelor can help you pick out finishes, surfaces and accents, as well as educate you on how they will stand the test of time. Minner states that this weather has been very helpful by extending the deck remodeling season, so don't put down the home wish list just yet!
