Crocker Elementary Student Wins Second Place for Philosophy Essay
She was the only Iowan to be recognized as one of the most philosophical students in America.

From a media release:
Crocker Elementary fourth grader Sophia Parker is the only Iowan to be recognized as one of the most philosophical students in America by The Kids Philosophy Slam. Sophia’s paper, "Which is More Powerful, Love or Hate?" placed second in the 2013 essay contest, beating out more than 4,000 entries from across the country.
The Kids Philosophy Slam is designed to make philosophy accessible and fun for kids of all ages and abilities, to promote a philosophical dialogue between kids and adults, and to promote a greater awareness of philosophy and education in everyday life. Entries were judged on creativity, originality and overall strength of the message the student is conveying.
After studying various philosophers and life questions in the Ankeny Extended Learning Program (AELP) teacher Linda Gehling had the students write the essay in class. Sophia’s essay discussed that she feels love is more powerful than hate, citing Confucius, Martin Luther King Jr., and her own life experience.
This summer Sophia was awarded $10 for her winning entry, and her essay is posted on The Kids Philosophy Slam website www.philosophyslam.org.
