Election 2012: How and Where to Vote in Ankeny

The general election is finally here. On Tuesday, Ankeny residents will choose candidates in races at the county, state and, of course, a national level.

So, make your plans today to get out and vote tomorrow. It's easy. Below you'll find everything you need to know to make your voice heard.

Voting Eligibility

According to the Iowa Secretary of State's website, to vote in Iowa, you must be a registered to vote. To qualify to register to vote, you must be:

• A U.S. citizen
• An Iowa resident
• At least 17 1/2 years old (must be 18 years old by election day to vote)

You cannot:

• Be a convicted felon (unless your voting rights have been restored)
• Be judged mentally incompetent to vote by a court
• Claim the right to vote in any other place

Polling Places

You have all day to get out and cast your vote in the general election on Tuesday. All polling places will be open from 7 a.m. until 9 p.m.

• Ankeny-1: First United Methodist Church, 710 N.E. 36th St.
• Ankeny-2: Resurrection Lutheran Church, 914 N.W. Ash Dr.
• Ankeny-3 and 4: Our Lady's Immaculate Heart Catholic Church, 510 E. First St.

Races to Watch

For local races, all eyes are on the contests for Iowa House of Representatives District 37 and 38.

Those who live in Ankeny precincts 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 10, 11, 12 and 13 are voting for one of three candidates running for the H.D. 37 seat. Those candidates are Republican Kevin Koester, Democrat John Phoenix and Independent candidate Brett Nelson. The remaining precincts will vote for one of two candidates vying for the H.D. 38 seat. Those candidates are Republican John Landon and N. John Boehm, who was nominated by petition.

Also, Ankeny residents will get to decide the winner in one of only two races in the country in which redistricting pits a pair of incumbents against one another. After Iowa lost a district in the 2010 census, 4th District Congressman Tom Latham moved into the new 3rd District to take on Democrat Leonard Boswell. Both are now vying for the 3rd District seat.
