High Speed Crash Ends With Injuries And Street Closure In Ankeny

The vehicle the suspect vehicle struck, continued northbound striking a power pole.

At 1 a.m., Friday, July 10, Ankeny Police officers observed a vehicle traveling at an excessive rate of speed in the northbound lanes of Ankeny Blvd. at SE Oralabor Road. Radar confirmed this vehicle was traveling 108 mph in a 45 mph zone and officers conducted a traffic stop at S. Ankeny Blvd. & SE Shurfine Road. The suspect initially stopped, but then sped away northbound. As the suspect’s vehicle approached the area of S. Ankeny Blvd. & SW Ordnance Road it struck another vehicle, crossed the southbound lanes of traffic and struck a light pole. The suspect exited his vehicle, was non-compliant and a Taser was used on him; he was then taken into custody. Medics were called to the scene and he was transported to a local hospital to be treated for his injuries.

The vehicle the suspect vehicle struck, continued northbound striking a power pole. Both occupants of this vehicle were evaluated on scene by Ankeny Fire medics and were released from the scene.

MidAmerican Energy has been contacted and is currently making repairs to the power and light poles in the area. South Ankeny Blvd is closed to southbound traffic from SW Ordnance Rd. to SW Magazine Rd until further notice.

The Iowa State Patrol is assisting with the crash investigation. Multiple traffic charges are pending against the suspect. Excessive speed and alcohol may have contributed to this incident. This case remains under investigation.
