You may be aware that Tuesday morning at 12:00 a.m. the United States government officially “shutdown”. This was caused because the democratic and republican part failed to pass a budget for the next fiscal year. While many are screaming doom and gloom, what does this mean for Des Moines residents and what, if any, changes will we see as a result of this government shutdown? First, lets start with the basics:
Why did the government get shut down?
The passing of the Affordable Care Act, better known as Obamacare has caused much dissention among the ranks of Republicans who do not want an increase in spending while the country will yet again face the debt ceiling in the coming months. Democrats argue that Obamacare was passed and has nothing to do with the separate issue of the fiscal year budget. The posturing from the Republican party allowing the government shutdown is unnecessary in the eyes of the democratic party.

Regardless of who’s side you are on it does not look like either party will compromise in the near future, so here we are!

How does this change America on a national scale?
Well the government shutdown only furloughs 25% of all government workers who are deemed “non-essential”. There are approximately 800,000 employees and are not tied to government security, the post office, or the military. You will still receive mail, be able to fly, but you may want to reschedule your visit to a national park.
How does this effect Ankeny?
The Ankeny area is pretty insulated from any of the ill effects that the government shutdown may cause. If you have or plan on applying for a passport in the near future that will delay the process. If you are worried that the government will not accept your check for taxes, don’t lose any sleep. They are still accepting tax payments, but if you attempt to call their help desk you’ll get an answering machine. The State Government is unaffected, Unemployment check will be delivered, homeland security isn’t compromised, University students will still receive their federal student loans at Drake and other Des Moines area colleges, and rural development projects with government funding will still go on.
Regardless of your stance on the healthcare bill it is fundamentally irresponsible to spend more money than you take in on a consistent basis. No Des Moines area family or business can consistently spend $50,000 a year when they only make $40,000 and expect to come out okay in the end. Responsibility is lacking in Washington on both sides of the aisle and may be best summed up in the following letter written anonymously to congress:
Dear Congress,
Last year I mismanaged my funds & this year I cannot decide on a budget. Until I have come to a unified decision that fits all of my needs & interests, I will have to shut down my checkbook & will no longer be able to pay my taxes. I’m sure you’ll understand. Thank you very much for setting an example we can all follow.
