Common Ground Iowa (CGI), Iowa One Call (IOC), Iowa Utilities Board (IUB), MidAmerican Energy Company (MEC), the Iowa Association of Municipal Utilities (IAMU) and Black Hills Energy, along with the Iowa Cubs will promote 811 during the game on 8-11-2013. 811 is the abbreviated three-digit dialing system to the state’s Iowa One Call system.
The first 1,000 reserved tickets sold at the game will be for the reduced price of $8.11. Attend the baseball game, see the appearances from Iowa One Call’s mascot- Gabby the Groundhog, and learn about 811 in a fun way. The entire sponsor team will distribute an additional 1,000 general admission tickets to the public through several events.
Why such a big emphasis on 811? What is it? What is it about? 811 is the phone number to call before you do any type of digging. Throughout Iowa there is a large and critical infrastructure of underground facilities ranging from water to natural gas to electricity to the vast communication networks that are susceptible to damage from the many types of routine digging.
Calling 811 will bring a locator to the property to mark the underground facilities near where you want to dig (at no cost to you- free). This way you know where it is safe to dig and where it is not. (There is a 48 hour waiting period, excluding Saturdays, Sundays and legal holidays from the time you call until you can begin digging).
