Internet Speed Tests
Many people get inaccurate results and don't understand why. Learn how to properly run an Internet speed test.

The ideal Internet speed test would be one between you and the website you're using. With that in mind, there isn't a speed test available that can give you 100% accurate results. However, it is possible to use a speed test and get a very good idea of the bandwidth available to you. Different speed test websites use different software and algorithms, so keep in mind that they are worthy simulations, but not complete reality.
Check your computer for viruses, adware and spyware. If your internet seems to be running slowly, one possibility is that the bandwidth and/or computer resources are being consumed with a virus or spyware. This isn't as common as other problems, but it is worth running a scan first just to be sure.
Now, before you start an Internet speed test, make sure you stop any downloads and close any devices, programs or apps that may be using your Internet connection. This may include any gaming systems, movie or music streaming devices, Internet-Ready TVs, media servers, smart phones, tablets, wireless printers or additional routers (other than your primary router). This step is absolutely critical and most people forget to shut something down, thus creating a less than accurate speed test.
Speed tests conducted over a wireless network are limited by the signal strength, possible interference and usually do not represent your full internet connection speed. For the most accurate internet speed test (whenever possible), use a computer with a wired network connection. If you must use a wireless device (e.g. tablet, smartphone, etc.), update any new apps, reboot the device first to close any apps that may be running and then run the speed test within close proximity (10-20 feet) of your wireless router. Visually verify that you have a good signal (all the bars are lit up).
We're now ready to do the speed test. I would strongly recommend using http://speedof.me/ This Internet speed test uses HTML5 instead of Flash or Java. On most computers or mobile devices, this test is faster to load and much less of a burden on your system resources. It uses 31 servers around the world and your Internet speed test is run from the quickest and most reliable location. Normally, the best speed test is run from the server location nearest you. Remember, you are trying to test your Internet connection and your available bandwidth- not the entire Internet.
Fast and reliable Internet service can make all the difference between a good and a terrible web experience. If you’re receiving slow speeds, it’s possible that there’s an issue on your end – not your Internet Service Provider (ISP). Using these tips should help eliminate the issues on your end. If you are still not satisfied with your results- contact your ISP and ask them to help you diagnose the problem!
