New Horizons Adult Day Center provides neurologically challenged adults with a home away from home

ANKENY, Iowa (July 31, 2013) – A balanced diet is important for a healthy lifestyle, especially for people suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, traumatic brain injuries and other neurological challenges. Thanks to the Ankeny Monsanto site, the New Horizons Adult Day Center will be able to continue to serve nutritious meals to physically and cognitively challenged adults, using a $10,000 grant from the Monsanto Fund.

The organization, a nonprofit in Ankeny, Iowa, provides a noon meal and afternoon snacks to low-to-moderate-income participants. New Horizons Adult Day Center will utilize the grant to fund its meal program, which operates five days a week and generally serves between 12 and 40 people daily.

“We give family members a break from caring for their loved ones and offer participants socialization and stimulation,” said Melissa Alexander, marketing director at New Horizons Adult Day Center. “We also offer structured group activities and provide nutritious food options.”

The New Horizons Adult Day Center also received a Monsanto Fund grant last year to support its food program. Kim Schaaf, the Ankeny site lead, heard about the organization through the community and felt the organization positively impacted Ankeny.

“The Ankeny site employees are excited they can help this special organization again in 2013,” said Schaaf. “Ensuring people are well fed and being provided balanced meals fits nicely with the Monsanto Fund’s mission of meeting critical needs for local people.”

This year, the Monsanto Fund awarded 127 site grants to nonprofit organizations in 26 states. In Iowa alone, 23 site grants were awarded and totaled $204,795. The Monsanto Fund continues to provide support to organizations such as New Horizon Adult Day Center, to help strengthen communities where farmers and Monsanto employees live and work.
