Self-Defense Class for Ankeny Women Starts Next Week
Police officers teach the RAD course three times a year, ending with a simulated attack so women can use their newfound skills.

Ankeny police teach self-defense courses for women three times a year, according to a news release, and the next series of classes runs Oct. 11, 13, 18 and 19.
The classes run in the evenings from 6 to 9 p.m. at the , 411 S.W. Ordnance Road. Cost is $30 for the Rape Aggression Defense system course and includes a training manual, RAD T-shirt and a lifetime return practice policy. Course fees must be paid by check (payable to the City of Ankeny). Payment must be made the first day of class.
The FBI estimates that one in three women will become a victim of a sexual assault in her lifetime.
RAD is the largest self-defense network in the country and is taught by certified instructors from the law enforcement community, according to the news release. The course teaches awareness, prevention, risk reduction and basic physical defense techniques. The course ends with a simulation, letting students test their abilities on a real person during a simulated attack.
