Speeders, Beware: Polk County Sheriff Will Roll Out Mobile Speed Cameras Next Week

Keep those speedometers in check when driving in Polk County.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office will roll out its first mobile speed cameras next week, according to the Des Moines Register. 

KCCI Channel 8 reported that the cameras will be mounted inside two Jeep Patriot SUVs, which will be moved around the county as needed starting Monday.

Drivers speeding past the vehicles at 10 mph or more over the speed limit will have a ticket sent to the owner of the vehicle, according to KCCI. The cameras record the speed and snap a picture of the vehicle and its license plate.

The vehicles will be deployed in the unincorporated areas of the county, according to the Register. One will be located at the Cottonwood Recreation Area Monday morning.

A grace period of about 30 days will follow, both sources reported, when the owners of speeding vehicles will receive a warning in the mail but will not be fined.

The sheriff’s office has not said when the grace period will end but will announce that date in the coming weeks, said sheriff’s spokeswoman Sgt. Jana Abens told the Register.
