A Taste of Egypt in Iowa
Residents at Vintage Hills at Prairie Trail retirement community in Ankeny had the chance to explore Egypt – without ever leaving Iowa
Residents and guests at Vintage Hills at Prairie Trail got the chance to explore Egypt – without ever leaving Iowa! As part of their Armchair Travel series, Vintage Hills at Prairie Trail hosted a social hour where guests were able to learn more about Egypt’s rich history and sample some delicious Egyptian food. Angelia McCright, Community Life Director at the retirement community, spoke about her experiences and shared photos from her own trip to Egypt in 2008.
“It was wonderful to share my travels with our residents and guests,” said McCright. “This series is a great way to spark interest in new cultures and parts of the world they might be unfamiliar with, all within the comfort of our community.”
The Egypt social hour featured traditional Egyptian foods, such as basbousa – a semolina cake, Salatet Zabadee – which is a yogurt cucumber dip, pita chips, mint tea and coffee with cardamom. McCright discussed her time in Alexandria and Cairo as well as Egyptian history and culture as a whole.

“It was very interesting and I can’t believe what I learned,” said Rosemary Berquist.
“You don’t think of how hard it is to live in some parts of the world,” said Laura Foster.
