For weeks, I've been sounding like a broken record, posting repeatedly on Facebook and on Ankeny Patch about the contest in the hope that Ankeny Miracle Park will garner enough votes to place in the Top 10 of 142 entries -- and make the finals of the contest, perhaps to WIN the grand prize of $25,000 in playground equipment...  a tremendous prize!!  

What would we get with that prize?  Many pieces of specialized equipment that enable kids with special needs including mobility issues to play *safely* and *alongside* other kids... something NONE of the over 40 parks/playgrounds in Ankeny currently provides.  (Try pushing a wheelchair over wood chips...  difficult, at best...)  

$25,000 in equipment might include 4, maybe even 5 separate items!  Included in our playground design: 

• Roller Table: A table with large rollers, easy to transfer onto; a child lies down on her back and pulls herself along the rollers/table by grasping bars above.  Ingenious equipment, as it's fun but also *beneficial*--providing sensory feedback and muscle massage along the child's back.

• Sway Fun Glider: The first glider that enables two children in wheelchairs to enter the apparatus, strap themselves IN THEIR CHAIRS into the glider, and ride; a bench seats another two children, and the kids may then use their body weight to rock the glider OR children without mobility issues can move it for them.  The glider encourages children of all abilities to interact! 

• OmniSpin: A safe, accessible alternative to the standard merry-go-round -- again, enabling children with special needs to ride while others move the apparatus.
