Trainers at Ankeny's Fitness World Save Man's Life

While it is not required for gyms to have defibrillators on hand, the staff at the gym told one local television station they were "lucky to have one."

A man is lucky to be alive thanks to the quick thinking of employees at one Ankeny gym, WHO Channel 13 reports.

Sixty-year-old Gary Rasmussen suffered a heart attack while at Fitness World in Ankeny early last week. Employees used a defibrillator on hand at the gym to resuscitate the man, the article said.

While the state of Iowa does not require gyms to have a defibrillator on hand, Fitness World employee Derick Wilson told the television station he was glad they had one.

Rasmussen had 100 percent blockage in one of his arteries, the article said. He is now at home recovering.
