The Ankeny Fire Department held its annual open house Wednesday evening. The event is held each year during National Fire Prevention Week and featured various family-friendly and educational activities.
Ankeny kids and families learned a little about fire safety Wednesday night and had a lot of fun doing it.
The held its annual open house from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. The rain lowered this year's attendance a bit, said Fire Chief Rex Mundt, but not enough to dampen the spirits of those who turned out or the firefighters, paramedics and fire department staff members who hosted it.
The open house is always held during National Fire Prevention Week.

This year’s theme was “Protect your Family from Fire” and encouraged families to spend time discussing how to prevent fires and what to do if a fire happens.
Children’s activities at the open house included practicing escape routes from the fire safety house, drawing the family escape plan, trying on firefighter gear and crawling through the firefighter search maze.

Adults could learn how to spot fire dangers, practice using a fire extinguisher, visit the fire museum and see interactive displays on all types of household dangers.
