UPDATE: Ankeny Police Determine Multiple Shots Fired at Department Around 1 A.M. Sunday

Video shows the Ankeny police station was shot around 1 a.m. Sunday by someone in a vehicle driving west on Southwest Ordnance Road, according to the Des Moines Register.

The vehicle slowed down long enough to discharge multiple rounds, said Police Chief Gary Mikulec on Tuesday. Police are not releasing details on the suspect vehicle, the number of shots fired or the caliber of bullets citing the ongoing investigation, the newspaper reported.

Investigators are talking to a man who reported a gun was stolen from his vehicle over the weekend, the Register said. That weapon has not yet been ruled out, Mikulec said.

While investigators worked Monday to determine how many bullets struck the 's office over the weekend, Police Chief Gary Mikulec was thankful that nobody was injured.

In fact, because the multiple rounds of gunfire struck police headquarters at 411 S.W. Ordnance Road late Saturday night or early Sunday morning, few people were around. Ankeny police employees didn't realize the building had been targeted until Sunday morning when a records clerk noticed glass shards on the floor as she began work, Mikulec said.

The chief said he's "sickened" by the risk to the public from the shooting. The shots were fired late at night when there are typically few visitors to the station, and traffic on Ordnance Road is quiet.

Had the shots been fired on a weekday, there would have been a real risk to drivers in the area and people passing near the station, he said.

"It's absolutely crazy," Mikulec told Patch on Monday. "It's beyond stupid to shoot at a police building when people on the other side of the wall have guns and can shoot back."

The building is occupied around the clock and the bullet trajectory and pattern were clearly intended to strike the police department, authorities said. Bullets were recovered in the second floor lobby and these bullets are being analyzed to determine the exact caliber.

The second floor lobby is in the Administration Division of the building that offices division captains and the police chief. This section of the building is heavily used during weekdays, but sees fewer visitors on weekends and during the evening, according to a city news release.

Mikulec said that while police department employees work in areas protected by bulletproof glass and walls, areas the public visits have more exposure.

The initial investigation suggests the shots were fired from the area of Ordnance Road. Building videotapes have been preserved and they are under review to pinpoint the exact time the gun was fired. Building cameras pick up Ordnance Road traffic in front of police headquarters and these cameras may provide additional details about a suspect vehicle along with the shooter, the release said.

Mikulec said multiple shots struck the front of the building's second floor, with several deflected by the brick. Some bullets went through windows and were found inside.

Employees working in the building overnight were in the rear of the station's first floor, protecting them from the shots.

Police have no suspects at this time. Investigators are tracking several theories and looking into recent arrests where threats of retaliation were made.

A damage estimate is not yet known.
