Top Woodworkers Win State Fair Awards
The top woodworkers from across the state squared off in the Wood Projects competition, judged prior to the start of the 2011 Iowa State Fair.
The Wood Projects contest consists of two divisions, Woodcarving and Woodworking.

- Perry Schaeffer, second place, stylized - human figure; second place, stylized - animal; first place, relief carving - nature scenes.
- Richard Schmitz, first place, miscellaneous - signs, canes and gunstocks; third place, miscellaneous - woodburning; third place, miscellaneous - decorated functional frames and clocks.
- Ed Hazelton, second place, whittled pieces - chains, balls and cages.
- John Twedt, third place, whittled pieces - chains, balls and cages
- Philip Kohler, first place, wild fowl - birds (group or pair); first place, wildlife - realistic predators (painted); first place and second place, wildlife - other animals; second place, group carvings.

Youth Awarded for Delectable Delights at State Fair
Judges served up a Sweepstakes award to Jessica Leeper of Altoona in the Adventureland Park Intermediate Division contest, judged Thursday at the 2011 Iowa State Fair.
Reserve Sweepstakes went to Sophia Ridgway of Johnston.
Judging of the sweets was based on taste, texture, appearance and creativity.

Stompers Secure Ribbons in State Fair Grape Stomp
Fairgoers of all ages stomped their way to success in the Grape Stomp contests held Thursday at the 2011 Iowa State Fair.
