Johnston Youth Claim Top Honors in State Fair Foods Contest

Youth ages 6-11 rolled up their sleeves to stir, cook and bake their way to a blue ribbon in the Adventureland Park Junior Division contest judged Thursday at the 2011 Iowa State Fair.

Two aspiring bakers from Johnston, Joseph Ridgway and Clarissa Ridgway, tied for Sweepstakes honors in the contest. The two impressed judges with ribbon-worthy cookies, bars, treats and breads.

Ankeny participants included:

  • Matthew Abbott, third place, coffee cake
  • Josephine Hyatt Crabb, honorable mention, Rice Krispies cookies or bars; third place, sandwich cookies; first place, handprint cookies; second place, any entry other than named.
  • Grace Abbott, second place, blonde brownies; first place, banana nut bread.
  • Matt Johnson, third place, cookies for Santa; third place, pumpkin bread (non-yeast, no nuts).
  • Karlin McGarvey, second place, chip dip.

Kids Craft Creative Sandwiches for State Fair Foods Contest

Josephine Hyatt Crabb of Ankeny captured First Place Overall in the Kids' Favorite Sandwich contest judged Friday at the 2011 Iowa State Fair. Hyatt Crabb grabbed a blue ribbon in the five to eight-year-old class with her Famous Roll-Up Sandwich before winning the overall honors.

Second Place Overall went to Julia Polson of Ankeny who impressed judges with her Dolphin Tails, and Audrey Pontier of Osceola earned Third Place Overall for her Thanksgiving Dinner Sandwich.

Gabrielle Abbott, Ankeny, also got third place in the ages 9-12 division.

Young Cake Decorators Compete in State Fair Contest

Elissa Krause of Johnston took First Place Overall in the Yummy's Young Decorators contest judged Sunday at the 2011 Iowa State Fair.

Krause joined youth ages 5 through 16 in decorating cakes using only edible adornments. While prizes were awarded for the top three cakes in each division, every entrant received a participation t-shirt.

Ankeny participants included:

  • Cassedy Clifton, third place, ages 5-8.
  • Samantha Pareti, honorable mention, ages 9-12.
  • Sierra Lucht, third place, ages 13-16.

Sprouting Success in State Fair Floriculture Competition

The state's youngest gardeners turned flowers into ribbons in the Junior and Intermediate Floriculture competitions judged last Thursday at the 2011 Iowa State Fair.

Ankeny participants included:

  • Megan Ford, fifth place, small rewards – ages 8-10; second place, flower garden – ages 8-10; fifth place, memories of summer – ages 8-10; fourth place, fair animal – ages 8-10
  • Noah Ford, third place, fair animal – ages 7 and under; fifth place, patio planter – ages 7 and under.
  • Gabrielle Abbott, first place, iris – ages 8-10; second place, gold finch – ages 8-10.
  • Matthew Abbott, second place, gold finch – ages 7 and under; first place, cat in the hat – ages 7 and under.
  • Julia Polson, second place, cat in the hat – ages 8-10.

INTERMEDIATE

  • Emily Polson, third place, iris; first place, cat in the hat.
  • Joshua Abbott, second place, gold finch.

Iowans Earn Honors in State Fair Creative Arts Contest

Ribbons were awarded to artistic Iowans in the Creative Arts contest judged prior to the start of the 2011 Iowa State Fair.

Ankeny participants include:

  • Wendy Rains, first place, beadwork - handmade beads/pendants.
  • Elizabeth Babcock, second place, china and porcelain painting - nonprofessional animal/bird/fish; first place, nonprofessional box; second place, mug or cup and saucer; third place, pen work.
  • Mollie Deem, second place, other creative works - photo scrap book page (two-page layout); second place, rubber stamp art - paper; first place, rubber stamp art - other than paper; first place, mini book.
  • George Hight, first place, stained glass - copper foil.
  • Deanna Sargent, first place, stained glass - 3-D (lamps, etc.).
  • Jesse Anderson, third place, tole and decorative painting - professional; second place, airbrush; honorable mention, household item.

Ankeny Woman Wins State Fair Goulash Contest

Judy Thompson of Ankeny claimed first place in the Growing Up on Goulash competition judged Sunday at the 2011 Iowa State Fair.

Cheryl Rogers of Ames took second place, and Christine Hollister of Des Moines claimed third place.

The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. Food Department judging was held in the Elwell Family Food Center sponsored by Blue Bunny.

Whitlock Named MVP in Coach's Rhubarb Crisp Competition at Iowa State Fair

Indianola resident Emma Whitlock earned first place in the Coach's Rhubarb Crisp competition judged Monday at the 2011 Iowa State Fair.

Second place honors were awarded to Tammy Boelman of Ankeny while Maureen Ryan of Mitchellville claimed the third place ribbon.

The rhubarb creations were judged on taste, appearance and creativity and the top three finishers received cash premiums for their winning dishes.

Edible Ugliness Earns Area Youth Ribbons in Iowa State Fair Ice Cream Contest

Claire Gilbert of West Des Moines and Tyler Davis of Johnston walked away with top honors in the ages 6 to 8 and ages 9 to 12 divisions, respectively, of the Ugliest Ice Cream competition judged Tuesday at the 2011 Iowa State Fair.

Shelby Davis of Johnston took second in the ages 6 to 8 division while Joseph Baumhover of Woodward placed third.

In the ages 9 to 12 division, MacKenzie Becker of Pella took second and Julia Polson of Ankeny placed third.

Sponsored by Blue Bunny, the contest asked entrants to use anything edible, in addition to a half gallon of vanilla ice cream, to make the ugliest ice cream treat. Judges critiqued the entries on overall ugliness as well as creativity.
