Why are we involved in Syria?

What is the American interest in Syria?

Syrian President Assad is a nasty guy.  Of that there is no question.  He is currently in a civil war with rebels who are trying to remove him from power.  These rebels have pledged loyalty to al qaeda.  They just executed a 14 year old boy for insulting Islam.  The rebels are not good people.

Why are we supporting them?

This is how we got into Afghanistan, we provided arms to the Afghans, who used them against the Russians.  Then those Afghans turned against us.  Why would we try to repeat that?

Senator John McCain went to Syria a couple weeks ago and met with some of the rebel leadership.  Why?  Clearly a public relations stunt.  What possible good PR could come out of that?  Who were we trying to show support to?  Why are we sending the rebels anything, much less giving them arms?

We are supporting al qaeda affiliated rebels, and we are ignoring the people in Turkey who are standing up against their oppressive government.  We ignored the people in Iran who stood up against their oppressive government.  Can anyone explain how this makes any sense?
