You came. You asked. We answered! 2014 Home + Garden Show FAQ

You Came, You Asked, We Answered at the 2014 Home + Garden Show!

The crew from Metro Waste Authority just wrapped up another successful run at the Home + Garden Show. We love having the chance to visit in person with folks who come to our booth with questions regarding our programs and services – and plenty of them come! We compiled some of the top inquiries (with answers) from the 2014 H+G Show.

  1. How do I know which plastics I can recycle in my curbside cart?
The easiest way to determine which plastics to recycle is to ask:  Does the container have a twist-off lid? If the answer is yes, then it's recyclable and so is the lid!

At one time, people were taught to recycle plastics based on the number on the container. They were told, "Recycle 1s and 2s." However, the new rule is to recycle plastics with a twist-off lid. This means no more searching for the number on the container! And, it's a more accurate way of collecting and recycling the correct plastics.

  2. Why are only some plastics accepted in my curbside recycling cart?
The simple answer is “supply and demand.” There must a manufacturer who can reuse the particular type of plastic, thus creating a market demand. The more “in demand” the type of plastic is, the more likely it is to be accepted in your curbside recycling program.

  3. My cart is damaged and I need it repaired or replaced. Who do I call?
You call your hauler and who that is depends on what community you live in. You can select your community on our website, see who your hauler is (it can vary by program –garbage, recycling or yard waste) and then call that hauler with your cart issue.

  4. Where can I get rid of old paint?
The answer depends on the type of paint. Latex paint is not hazardous and can solidified and thrown in the trash. Learn how

Oil- and lead-based paint are hazardous and should be taken to our Metro Hazardous Waste Drop-Off in Bondurant where they can be properly disposed of.

We thank all who stopped in to see us at the MWA booth this year and look forward to seeing you again at the 2015 Home + Garden Show.
